Abstract

Chilean Antarctic policy has been the result of a combination of traditional territorial positions, the organizing action of the State, Chile's participation in the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, and the search for a legal and practical accommodation with the positions and interests of third countries, under the Treaty once in force. Where is it headed? Should it concentrate on the issues of institutional modernization and internal organization, or should it put more emphasis on the challenges of the Antarctic System and its ability to respond to its various fields of action? This paper attemps to answer these questions relating to the Chilean position in the Antarctic continent.
