Abstract

This paper analyzes elements of the current debate on the security policy of the United States after the Cold War. First, the costs of the containment policy vis-à-vis the Soviet Union are explained, and then the expansion that the concept of security has undergone. It addresses the development by the Department of Defense of a new military strategy and the criticism it has aroused. At the same time it refers to the discussion about the budget, which sheds light on security policy and military strategy. Finally, some studies on the international role of the United States in this new era are mentioned and it is concluded that although the United States will continue to be the main military power, the resources allocated to this sector will decrease, since true power will be based so much on military and economic force.
