Authors

Abstract

This article aims to present Marxist sociologist and philosopher Michael Löwy's perspective on the revolutionary praxis of socialist José Carlos Mariátegui. To achieve this, the first section provides an exposition of the most important aspects of Michael Löwy's intellectual and political trajectory, according to certain social processes or events that occurred during the second half of the 20th century. The following section presents a synthesis of what Löwy calls the "revolutionary period" (1920-1930) of Marxism in Latin America, based on one of his essays on the topic. The article then explores the contributions of José Carlos Mariátegui, whom Löwy considers the most prominent Marxist of the period. Löwy's central thesis, the romantic Marxism of Mariátegui, is explained. Finally, the article concludes by highlighting the importance of Löwy's contribution to the praxis of this revolutionary intellectual.
