Abstract

The purpose of this work is to analyze the relevance of the concept of evil, regarding the efforts to explain and justify its concrete emergence. More precisely, this is an attempt to show the difficulties that the definition of evil face considering its unpredictable and heterogeneous emergence. Initially, the path intended to cover would depict the problem of evil as seen by a list of contemporary authors. Subsequently, there would be an analysis about the Lisbon earthquake in the eighteenth century and Auschwitz in the twenty, as concrete cases that exhibit the historical and relative character of evil. Finally, there would be a comparison between the philosopher Philip Cole and the literary critic Terry Eagleton, in order to rethink our approach to the concept of evil.
