The Unctad III building was inaugurated in April 1972 for the United Nations Third Conference on Trade and Development in the Third World.
This was a major project in the history of architecture in Chile. It was emblematic in many different ways, because of the direct influence of the Bauhaus Dessau by Hannes Meyer and because of the likelihood and unlikelihood of a ¨contemporary Chilean art project¨ from an integration and science perspective.
During the 70´s it was modified to house the Ministry of Interior of the Military Government. Later it became an Assembly Hall managed by the Ministry of Defense. This building was a part of the imaginary, symbolic and real realms of the city of Santiago. It recently burned down, in March 2006. This fire was caused by negligence and poor maintenance.
This article offers a technical and historical perspective on this milestone of modern architecture, not only in Chile but also in South America
