ARCHITECTURE AND INVESTIGATION + FREE THEME

50th Issue | 35th Anniversary

In the Revolution of 1830, the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris was on the verge of being demolished due to its advanced state of deterioration. Its salvation would come not from the Vatican, nor from a patron, nor from a political will, but from the pen of Victor Hugo with his novel Notre Dame de Paris (1831).

In times of uncertainty and the erosion of the social consensus that sustains our discipline and our academic and professional practices, we invite you to raise your pens and write in the next issue of Revista de Arquitectura.

This journal is an international scientific publication with an Ibero-American emphasis, edited by the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Chile and affiliated with the Department of Architecture. Founded in 1990, it has maintained 35 years of publication, establishing itself as one of the strongest and most enduring architecture journals in the country and the region.

On its 50th edition, the journal is launching a special call inviting academics, researchers, professionals, and postgraduate students to submit original articles, essays, projects, and works that contribute to the debate and reflection on architecture, city, landscape, design, and heritage, both in Chile and in the international context. We live in difficult times where uncertainty seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Architecture as a discipline is in serious danger, as noted by Patrick Schumacher, director of Zaha Hadid Architects (Schumacher, 2025). Among the causes of this decline, he points to political distractions and the stagnation of architectural education. Just as in 1830, architecture may once again be saved by words. Research is one possible path, and we invite you to participate through our journal. It is an invitation to write about our discipline—whether as a contribution to knowledge, dissemination, debate of ideas, or even as therapy.

Humberto Eliash, Arch. Universidad de Chile.
