In this article we propose to understand the processof building modern ideas in architecture and urbanism of the press in Rio de Janeiro, between 1930 and 1945. We make a critical reading of three journals representing the academic and professional fields, the Journal of Architecture, National School of Fine Arts, the magazine Architecture and Urbanism Institute of Architects of Brazil and the Municipal Engineering Magazine, created by Federal District Municipality in 1932.These magazines still give us a portrait of the interests of the profession, both academically and regarding professional practice in response to changes in technology, changing values and habits. This serves to affirm the assertive of Solá-Morales (2004) that the phenomena of architectural culture are embedded inmore general cultural production and the production of living space, thus understanding the history of architecture as an aspect of modernization processes.
