Abstract
Starting from the developments in philosophy made by Jean-Luc Nancy and Maurice Blanchot in 1983 regarding the notions of ‘community’, Josef Koudelka's photographic work in Gypsies (1975) is examined. Through the descriptive analysis of a selection of images, it is proposed that these photographs not only focus on human portraits but also capture spaces and domestic objects, intimate atmospheres, and dynamics of life, inciting communication and highlighting diverse spatial conditions of Romani community dwelling. The article suggests that revisiting these reflections from a philosophical perspective, in conjunction with the analytical observation of the artistic work being addressed, would urge architecture to consider ‘that’ community it seeks to engage with in terms of insufficiency rather than as the product of a deterministic operation.
