The hearth as an element of architecture: a history of its displacements

For the Architecture and Community call, I present a revision of the hearth as a fundamental element of architecture and of the changes and displacements undergone in its long history. In Vitruvio's treatise, a collective fire is the origin of architecture and its reason for being. However, for Leon Battista Alberti the origin and the main element of architecture is rather the division or partition. Since then, one can observe a certain withdrawal of the hearth, or at least a withdrawal of its social part, which is housed in its original sense. Starting from Gottfried Semper's theory in the 19th century, a resurgence of this element and its social sense can be observed, which is attempted to be traced in projects and images of modern architecture.
