The system-houses by Fernando Higueras: three cases in Madrid in the 1960s

Abstract
In the 1960s, Fernando Higueras designed and built three houses in the outskirts of Madrid, Muñoz, Santonja and Villaseñor, where he refined the same structural and constructive solutions to such an extent that they all seem to be one and the same project. They also share a client profile, professional or vocational artist who, as Higueras himself, had a complex personality in which the poetic and the pragmatic coexist. From an analysis of these works, including the intermediate versions that have been preserved, we can infer Higueras’s effort to refrain from formalizing them as closed and complete entities, presenting them instead as organisms susceptible to change and growth. In this sense, they could be described as system-houses, since unlike object-houses, which are conceived as finished units, these are configurations governed by an open logic, capable of growing, adapting, and transforming. At the beginning of the following decade, Higueras returned to the object-based vision of the house, although he attempted to make it compatible with the construction solutions developed in these projects.
