From landfill to parkland: between utility and beauty of waste

Abstract
This article provides a reflection on our production and consumption system, which causes serious environmental damage to the landscape in the form of waste accumulated in urban peripheries: landfills. It is necessary to raise awareness and propose solutions to this urgent problem. One of
them is the recovery and transformation of these places of deterioration— ‘waste landscapes’—to restore the damage caused to nature and, at the same time, create new strategic public spaces in the city. The methodology used—from theory to practice— focuses on the study of three cases throughout history, together with a new open and continuous conception of the landscape. The results identify strategies that can be applied nowadays. The Valdemingómez forest park in Madrid, as a contemporary built case, shows some operational keys for the recovery of waste landscapes.
